Small ceremonies

Eloping and micro-weddings in Vermont

A small Vermont wedding uses the same marriage requirements as a larger one: an $80 license, authorized officiant and ceremony within the 60-day validity period. State law requires no witnesses, though a religious ceremony may. Compare small-event packages by the actual maximum attendance, meals, lodging nights and taxes rather than a universal micro-wedding definition.

Small packages can have high fixed costs per guest

Sterling Ridge lists a $5,000 micro package for up to 30; divided by 30 that is about $166.67, or $250 at an assumed 20 attendees. Sleepy Hollow lists a $5,165 midweek micro package for up to 75 with one inn night and 9% tax: $5,629.85 at its stated rate. Neither division is a standalone per-person tariff.

Grafton’s winter intimate package is $16,995 for up to 50 with taxes and gratuities included; the 50-person Phelps Barn package is $19,995. Their $3,000 difference is about 15% of the latter price, but dates and inclusions still need to match. Same-day legal issuance is possible without a waiting period; the clerk’s hours and officiant’s availability remain practical requirements.

Three verified Vermont venues print a price for a wedding of 75 guests or fewer, and per guest the range is wide. Sleepy Hollow's midweek micro-wedding for up to 75 is $5,165 plus tax, or $69 a guest. Sterling Ridge Resort's micro-wedding for 30 is $5,000, $167 a guest, and its elopement for two is $1,900.

The Grafton Inn's intimate weddings run $340 to $414 a guest, with taxes and gratuities, dinner and beer and wine included. The packages differ: some include lodging, some a meal, some neither, so read the line beside each price. Smaller is not always cheaper per head.

Why per-guest figures mislead at a small Vermont wedding

A package for two is mostly a fixed cost, so dividing it by two is arithmetic, not a price a guest would recognize. The Sterling Ridge elopement excludes lodging and requires a two-night stay.

The lodging is what differs most. Sleepy Hollow and Sterling Ridge include nights in their own rooms.

The Grafton Inn includes a plated dinner, beer and wine and every rental. Ask what is inside before you compare.

What the per-guest figure does when the guest list shrinks

Most of these packages are a fixed price, so the per-guest figure only holds at the stated headcount. Sleepy Hollow's $5,165 micro-wedding is $69 a guest at 75 people and $129 a guest at 40. Sterling Ridge's $5,000 package is $167 a guest at 30 and $250 at 20.

The price did not move. Only the division did. If your list is well under a package's stated maximum, compare the total price, not the per-guest line.

Other Vermont venues built for a small guest count

Trapp Family Lodge's Alcove holds up to 20, the Wildflower Inn states weddings for up to 50, and the Essex Resort's Chef's Kitchen holds six. None prints a price.

Do small wedding packages include lodging?

Some do. Sleepy Hollow includes an inn night and Sterling Ridge two nights in a cabin or house. Check the Grafton Inn's page for what each of its packages includes.

Does a Vermont micro-wedding package include food?

At the Grafton Inn, yes: a plated dinner, and beer and wine on the intimate packages. Sterling Ridge and Sleepy Hollow state no catering.

What is the difference between an elopement and a micro-wedding?

Venues use the words differently. Sterling Ridge's elopement is for two guests, its micro-wedding for up to 30, and the Grafton Inn's micro wedding for 10.

Are these prices taxed?

Sterling Ridge and Sleepy Hollow add tax. The Grafton Inn says taxes and gratuities are included.

Which Vermont venues host under 20 guests?

Trapp Family Lodge's Alcove holds up to 20, and the Grafton Inn and Sterling Ridge sell packages for 2, 10 and 15.

Do I need witnesses to marry in Vermont?

No. See the marriage license page.

What should I ask a venue that prints a small-wedding price?

What the price includes, whether lodging and a meal are inside it, and whether it changes if your guest count falls below the stated number.

Does the per-guest table rank venues?

No. It divides each venue's own printed price by its own printed guest count.

What makes Vermont's process elopement-friendly, in one table

The parts of Vermont's marriage process that matter most for a small or fast wedding, from the Vermont Department of Health.

Requirement
What Vermont says; Why it matters for a small or fast wedding.
Waiting period
None; The license can be obtained close to the date instead of weeks ahead.
Blood test
Not required; One fewer appointment to schedule around a compressed timeline.
Residency
No Vermont residency requirement; Neither of you has to live in Vermont, which is what makes it workable for an out-of-state elopement.
Witnesses
Not required by state law; A civil ceremony needs no one else present at all, beyond an authorized officiant.
Licence validity
60 days; The one real deadline: time it to the ceremony instead of obtaining it far in advance.
The Wildflower Inn
States it hosts “elopements, wedding dinners, and rehearsal gatherings” directly through its own team; Up to 50 guests.
Trapp Family Lodge
The Alcove: the smallest named space of the 45 venues; Up to 20 guests.

A friend can still legally marry you

Because Vermont law does not require witnesses, a two-person elopement can be as simple as the couple and an officiant. The officiant does not have to be clergy or a judge: see who can officiate for the $100 temporary registration that lets a friend or relative perform the ceremony legally, provided it is filed before the date.

What "eloping" does not remove

A smaller guest list changes almost nothing about the legal process itself: the license still costs $80, still expires after sixty days, and the certificate still has to be returned to the town clerk within ten days of the ceremony by whoever officiates. See the marriage license page for the full process and getting a copy of the certificate afterward.

This is not the same as a backyard or unlicensed ceremony

Can you get married the same day in Vermont?

There is no state-mandated waiting period, so a license obtained same-day and a ceremony performed same-day is legally possible, provided a town clerk can issue it and an authorized officiant is available.

Do we need to live in Vermont to elope here?

No. The Department of Health's guidance places no residency condition on obtaining a license, from any town or city clerk in the state.

Do we need witnesses for a Vermont elopement?

No. Vermont law does not require witnesses at a civil ceremony, though a religious ceremony's own tenets might, separately from state law.

What qualifies as a micro-wedding?

There is no legal definition: it is industry shorthand for a small guest list, commonly under 50. This page uses it for the venues and process that support a small ceremony in Vermont specifically.

Which Vermont venues are built for a small guest count?

Two publish something sized for it: the Wildflower Inn hosts elopements directly for up to 50 guests, and Trapp Family Lodge's Alcove holds up to 20.

Does eloping cost less than the license process for a large wedding?

No. The license itself is the same $80 regardless of guest count. What changes is everything the venue and vendors would otherwise charge for scale.

Can a friend officiate our elopement?

Yes, through the same $100 temporary officiant registration used for any Vermont wedding: see who can officiate.

How long is the license valid for an elopement?

Sixty days from issue, the same as any Vermont marriage license. Time it to your actual ceremony date instead of getting it early.

Is an unofficiated ceremony with no license the same thing?

No. Everything on this page describes a legally binding marriage under a state-issued license. A symbolic ceremony with no license filed is not a legal marriage in Vermont or anywhere.

Can we still have a reception later with more guests?

Yes, and nothing about the license or the small ceremony restricts it. Some couples elope for the legal ceremony and hold a larger celebration separately.

What are the best places to elope in Vermont?

The two venues here that publish a small-guest-count elopement offering by name are the Wildflower Inn, for up to 50 guests, and Trapp Family Lodge's Alcove, for up to 20: a starting point to contact, not a ranking.

Is this elopement guidance legal advice?

No. It summarizes the state's own published marriage guidance; confirm specifics with the town clerk who will issue your license.

What are the Vermont marriage license requirements?

$80, no residency condition, no waiting period, no witnesses required, and a 60-day validity window from any Vermont town or city clerk.

How many people count as a micro wedding?

There is no legal threshold: industry usage puts it under 50, and these venues's own small-guest-count venues draw the line lower still: the Wildflower Inn hosts up to 50 directly, and Trapp Family Lodge's Alcove holds up to 20.

How big is a micro wedding compared with a full guest list?

A fraction of it by design, not by compromise. The two venues here built for the small end, the Wildflower Inn and Trapp Family Lodge's Alcove, publish their own ceilings instead of simply being a large room with fewer chairs in it.

How much does getting eloped cost in Vermont?

The license itself is $80 regardless of guest count, and the temporary officiant registration is $100 if a friend performs the ceremony. Everything beyond that is the venue and vendors you choose, which is exactly what scales down with the guest list.
