Wedding rings in Vermont: timing, and what we don't sell
Compare wedding-ring costs using the actual metal, stones, size, engraving and return terms. Buying outside Vermont does not necessarily remove Vermont tax: the Department of Taxes says taxable purchases brought into or used in Vermont can incur use tax when the seller did not collect the required tax.
Show the tax separately from the ring specification
At an assumed $2,000 taxable price, six percent is $120. If an applicable one-percent local sales tax is added to a Vermont sale, the combined seven percent is $140. Transaction location and tax already paid can change the result; use the state’s use-tax guidance rather than assuming an out-of-state receipt is tax-free.
State the final size, engraving text, completion date, warranty and whether resizing or personalization changes return rights. A separately printed engraving line does not by itself establish different tax treatment. Ask the seller for the taxable base and keep the written specification before authorizing irreversible work.

Wedding rings are the purchase furthest from anything a venue publishes. No venue publishes a jewelry policy, and the only state rule that touches the purchase is sales tax. What is worth stating is timing.
A ring bought close to the date carries risk if it needs resizing or engraving. Most jewelers state that this takes time. So a ring belongs on the same early-planning list as the marriage license and the officiant registration, not in the final weeks.
Ask the jeweler for a written turnaround for sizing and engraving, and whether rush work carries a fee, then count back from the wedding date with a cushion for shipping and a second fitting.
What Vermont sales tax adds to a ring
Unlike clothing, jewelry is not exempt. The Vermont Department of Taxes lists jewelry among taxable clothing accessories, so rings bought from a Vermont seller carry the 6% state sales tax, plus a local option sales tax in towns that have adopted one.
Vermont state sales tax at 6% on rings at three price points, before any local option tax.
- Ring price
- Tax at 6%; Total; Total at 7% in a local-option town.
The Department of Taxes describes the local option sales tax as 6% sales tax plus 1%, for 7% in total, in towns that have voted to levy it. Ask the jeweler which rate applies to your purchase.
A ring bought from a seller in a state without sales tax, or made to order by a Vermont maker who collects it, changes the total, so ask for the tax as its own line on the quote.
Jewelry gifts for the wedding party
The same guide's taxable list covers the gifts couples give their attendants, since jewelry, watches, wallets and handbags are all taxable accessories.
Vermont state sales tax at 6% on six matching gifts at three price points, before any local option tax.
If the gifts are engraved or monogrammed by the seller, ask whether the engraving is billed on its own line or folded into the item price, since that decides what the tax applies to.
Ordering rings so the wedding date does not squeeze the jeweler
Rings that are engraved, resized or made to order need lead time the ceremony date does not allow for, so ask the jeweler for the turnaround before you pay a deposit. Ask what the return policy is for a custom piece, who insures the rings between pickup and the ceremony, and whether the quote lists Vermont's 6% sales tax as its own line.
Pick up the rings a few weeks early and try them on, so any resizing happens before the rehearsal weekend, not during it.
Questions to ask about rings & jewelry, and what each answer decides.
When should we buy wedding rings?
Early enough to allow for resizing or engraving turnaround: treat it like the marriage license and officiant registration, both early-planning tasks with real deadlines.
Do Vermont weddings require a specific ring style or metal?
No. Nothing in state law or on any venue's own page touches this: it is entirely a couple's choice.
