Season

Season and weather: when Vermont venues are open

Choose a Vermont wedding date against the selected room’s season, then plan for the day’s actual weather. Von Trapp’s tent runs mid-May–mid-October while its Mozart Room is available year-round. Harpoon Windsor’s lawn runs May 15–October 15; its winter warming huts are a separate 36-person format.

A winter package can change both price and guest limit

Sleepy Hollow’s $6,930 off-season weekend is $3,900 below its $10,830 peak weekend before the stated 9% tax. That is about 36.0% less than peak, with a winter recommendation of 140 rather than 165 guests.

Its midweek micro package has different lodging nights and attendance. Compare the actual format, not just the month.

Boyden Farm’s FAQ says May–October, but its 2027 pricing calendar lists dates through November 6; confirm a November reservation explicitly. Stratton’s chapel is year-round while Timber Hall and summit settings list Memorial Day–October.

Check the named indoor alternative, guest routes, snow or ground access and supplier weather limits. The solar calculator supplies date-specific astronomical times, not a weather forecast.

What time does the sun set for a Vermont winter wedding?

In Burlington, 4:15 pm on 19 December and 7:05 pm on 20 March.

Which Vermont venues state no winter weddings?

The Barn at Boyden Farm says May to October only, and Okemo's Roundhouse lists May to November. Others state only a warm-weather window.

Is a ski resort a good winter wedding venue?

Several state a year-round option: Stowe Mountain Resort, Stratton, Mount Snow and Trapp Family Lodge. Ask about lodging and road conditions for guests.

What should I ask a venue about a winter date?

Whether the room is heated, the last date it runs your space, snow removal and parking, and the rain-or-snow plan. See rain plans.

Do winter dates change the tax?

No. Vermont's 9% meals tax and 10% alcohol tax apply all year, plus 1% in a local option town. See minimums and taxes.

Does the winter list rank venues?

No. It lists what each venue states about itself and does not judge the venue.

Vermont's wedding season is shorter than its calendar and each venue draws the line in a different place, so the stated window is worth more than any advice about foliage. Seventeen venues commit to a date in writing, in two shapes. Barn venues state a hard edge: the Barn at Boyden Farm runs May through October, Shelburne Vineyard's outdoor tent May through late September, both closed the rest of the year.

Resorts instead pair a year-round room with a seasonal one: Stowe Mountain Resort's Great Room runs year-round, and the Barn at Smugglers' Notch prices an off-season window instead of closing. Trapp Family Lodge and Jay Peak each name one seasonal space. Okemo, Stratton, Mount Snow, Sterling Ridge and five more each state a window.

A venue that states no window is not necessarily open year-round. It means the window is a question for your first email.

Season and “heated indoor room” are two different answers

A venue that runs weddings all year may do so in one small room, and the barn or tent you want may have a window half that long. So the question to ask is not “are you open in October” but “what is the last date in the year you will run a wedding in this specific space”.

That phrasing gets a date; the other one gets a yes

Why the silence matters

24 of the 45 venues here publish no season at all. A tented or barn venue with no published window is not a venue that is open all year. It is a venue that has not told you, and the answer will arrive at the point where you have already chosen a date. Ask early.

The rain question is separate

Season tells you whether the space is available. It says nothing about what happens on the day if the weather turns, which is a different question with a different answer: see rain plans.

When is Vermont wedding season?

Shorter than the calendar, and drawn differently by every venue, so the venue's own stated window is worth more than any general advice.

How many venues publish nothing about season?

Seven of the ten here. That is not the same as being open all year. It means the answer will arrive after you have chosen a date.

Does foliage season affect availability?

It affects demand instead of the rules, and at concentrated resort towns that shows up as peak weekends being taken very early.

Is a heated barn a year-round venue?

Ask for the date instead of the heating. A barn that is glorious in September can be unusable in late October regardless of what is installed.

Do prices change with the season?

At venues that publish a spread, yes. Basin Harbor states that both its package range and its minimum vary by season and day of week.

Does a stated season guarantee good weather?

No, and the two questions are separate. Season decides whether the space is available; the rain plan decides what happens on the day.

Is a winter wedding realistic in Vermont?

At venues with a stated year-round indoor room, yes. The requirement is commonly guest travel instead of the venue.

When should we ask about season?

In the first email, alongside the alcohol rule. Those two rule venues out faster than anything else.

Does the season affect the marriage license?

No. The license rules are the same all year, but the sixty-day window still applies: see the license page.

What are the best months for an outdoor wedding in Vermont?

Only the venues that state an outdoor season answer this directly: Trapp Family Lodge's tent runs mid-May through mid-October and Shelburne Vineyard's outdoor lawn May through late September. Foliage weekends inside those windows are the ones booked earliest, not the ones with the best weather odds.

What is the best time of year for a Vermont wedding?

It depends on the stated window of your chosen venue: a barn venue closed in winter and a year-round resort room answer this question completely differently for the same date.

What is the best time to hire a Vermont wedding venue?

As soon as the season is settled. A venue with a stated window, like the two above, is only bookable inside it. Popular dates inside a short season go first.

How long do you need to plan a wedding at a Vermont venue?

No single figure applies, since it depends far more on the venue's own season and inquiry speed than on a generic planning calendar. An inquiry-only venue like Hildene or Twin Farms alone can take several exchanges just to reach a price.

Vermont wedding seasons: sugaring, mud, foliage and snow

Vermont has more than four seasons, and couples who name them learn what to ask. Late winter brings sugaring, when the maple sap runs. Spring brings mud season, when dirt roads soften and some venues are shut.

Summer is the long green season, with warm days and cool nights in the hills. Autumn brings foliage, which peaks earlier in the north and at elevation, and it brings early darkness. Winter is snow, and ski resorts run year-round rooms.

Venues draw their own lines. The Barn at Boyden Farm runs May through October and hosts no winter or early-spring weddings. The Barn at Smugglers' Notch prices an off-season window from November to April.

Stated seasons matter more than any forecast.

Vermont wedding seasons month by month: what venues state

The seasonal windows venues state in writing, taken from their own sites on the dates shown on each venue's page.

The Barn at Boyden Farm
Weddings May through October only. No winter or early-spring weddings.
Trapp Family Lodge
Seasonal tent from mid-May to mid-October. The Mozart Room runs year-round.
Shelburne Vineyard
Outdoor space late spring to early fall. Tent May to late September.
The Barn at Smugglers' Notch
Books year-round. November to April is marketed as off-season.
Harpoon Brewery, Windsor
Outdoor spaces May 15 to October 15. Warming huts November 1 to April 14.

Sugaring season and mud season at a Vermont wedding

Late winter is sugaring season, when maple sap is boiled to syrup. A wedding at the end of it can serve sugar on snow, hot syrup poured over snow. See local food for what to ask a caterer.

Mud season follows. Dirt roads soften, and towns may post weight limits that affect delivery trucks.

Some venues do not host in this period at all. Ask each venue what it does.

Summer and foliage: peak wedding weeks in Vermont

Summer and early autumn are the seasons most couples want, and the weekends fill first. Foliage peak varies by year, by elevation and by how far north you are, so treat any date as a window, not a promise.

Autumn also brings early darkness. Use the sunset calculator to see when the light ends on your date, and Vermont weather surprises for what else changes.

A winter wedding in Vermont: ski resorts and cold-weather venues

Ask about snow removal, parking and guest travel. A winter wedding in a rural venue needs a plan for the road.

Vermont wedding weather: black flies, cold nights and mud

Cold nights at a Vermont outdoor wedding
Temperatures fall quickly after sunset in the mountains. A ceremony at four is comfortable and a dance at nine is not. Plan blankets, wraps, a heated tent or an indoor move for the evening; Ask any tent company about sidewalls and heat, and the venue about heater rules. See tents.

Insects and other outdoor nuisances at Vermont weddings

Grass and long meadows carry ticks. If the ceremony is in one, tell guests to expect it.

Wind, rain and soft ground at a Vermont venue

Wind moves arbours, unpins veils and drowns an unamplified officiant. A lakeshore or hilltop sees more than a valley.

Ask for the wind plan as well as the rain plan. See rain plans.

Soft ground after a wet week stops delivery trucks and turns overflow parking into mud. Ask what the venue does, and where the fallback is.

The Inn at the Round Barn Farm
Decision made within two hours of the ceremony.
Trapp Family Lodge
Mozart Room indoors, up to 120 for a backup ceremony.
The Barn at Smugglers' Notch
Ceremony can move indoors within 15 minutes, decided at any point.
Early darkness and the wedding timeline in Vermont
In autumn the sun sets earlier each week. A ceremony that starts at four ends in gold light in September and in dusk in late October. Check your date in the sunset calculator.

The timeline guide shows how to work back from the light and from the venue's end time.
