Essex Resort weddings: room sizes and catering rules

Town EssexType Inns & resorts

The Essex Resort offers 120 guest rooms and event spaces ranging from small suites to its 350-person Farmhouse and Atrium. Its wedding FAQ prohibits outside caterers, permits outside desserts for a fee and makes its preferred nonfood supplier list optional. Those are separate permissions when comparing a wedding package.

The room name decides the dinner limit

A hypothetical 300-person reception is 50 above the Ballroom’s listed 250-person figure but below the 350-person Farmhouse figure. Obtain the seated layout for the actual room. Dogs may join an outdoor ceremony with a designated sitter afterward; only service animals are permitted inside event spaces, subject to applicable service-animal rights.

The Essex Resort & Spa is a full-service resort with 120 guest rooms, and its wedding page makes the case that hosting the ceremony, reception and lodging in one place lets guests relax. The rooms, spa, golf course and two restaurants are on the same 18-acre property in the Champlain Valley.

The Essex Resort: the setting, and what couples plan around

One rule is worth knowing before you plan the ceremony. Only service animals are permitted inside the event spaces, but couples are welcome to include a dog in an outdoor ceremony.

The resort is also known as Vermont's culinary resort, with its Cook Academy cooking school on the grounds, as Vermont Business Magazine notes, so the food and beverage conversation is a stronger part of the decision here than at a venue that rents a room and lets a caterer in.

Read the seating table beneath the room's headline

The Essex page gives the Farmhouse a 350-guest headline, but its layout table lists 215 for rounds and 240 for rectangular meal tables. The Ballroom has a 250 headline, while its table lists 150 for a plated meal at rounds and 100 for a buffet at rounds. Those are different arrangements on the same source page.

For a 200-person dinner, the Ballroom headline alone would be a poor basis for accepting invitations. Ask the resort which layout it can actually reserve, including the dance floor and food service. The Atrium similarly has separate meal configurations beneath its general occupancy description.

Keep the requested furniture and service format on the offer. The catering restrictions, outside-dessert exception and optional preferred nonfood suppliers are separate permissions; approval for a photographer does not establish permission for an independent caterer.
