Vermont marriage license 60-day deadline calculator

Enter a ceremony date or license issue date to display a 60-calendar-day interval. Vermont’s marriage FAQ states that the license is valid for 60 days from issue. This date arithmetic does not interpret an uncertain expiration boundary or a clerk’s opening hours; follow the expiration printed by the issuing clerk.

Confirm the printed expiry before relying on a boundary

July 20 and September 18, 2027 are 60 calendar days apart. That is an arithmetic boundary, not a guarantee that a July 20 license is usable at every time on September 18. Arrange the appointment comfortably within the stated period and confirm the actual validity dates with the clerk.

A Vermont marriage license is valid for sixty days from the date it is issued, and if the ceremony has not happened by then the license is void and you start again. Because there is no waiting period in Vermont, the risk is entirely at the far end of that window instead of the near one: collecting the license too early is the mistake, not collecting it too late.

The calculator does one thing and does it exactly: it counts sixty days. Give it your wedding date and it returns the earliest date the license may be issued; give it an issue date and it returns the date the license becomes void. The count applies no buffer of its own, so leave yourself one.

Worked example: license deadline
For a wedding on Saturday, September 18, 2027 :.

A license issued before Tuesday, July 20, 2027 would be void by the wedding date. Because Vermont has no waiting period, any date between that one and the wedding works, so the safe approach is to collect it comfortably inside the window instead of as early as possible.

How the license deadline works, and its limits

The calculator counts 60 days, in whichever direction you ask. Given a wedding date it subtracts 60 days to give the earliest valid issue date; given an issue date it adds 60 to give the date the license becomes void. The 60-day period is the one the Vermont Department of Health states, quoted on the license page.

No buffer is added

The dates it returns are the exact boundaries, so leave yourself room instead of planning to the edge. Vermont has no waiting period, so there is no penalty for collecting the license well inside the window.

The tool cannot tell you a clerk's opening hours, and it is not legal advice. The town clerk who issues your license is the authority.

Which clerk do we apply to?

Any Vermont town or city clerk, regardless of where you live or where you are marrying.

What does it cost?

$80. There is a recorded conflict on this figure: see the license page.

Does the officiant registration expire too?

Yes, at the same time as the license. See who can officiate.
