Vermont wedding catering tax calculator
Enter the taxable meal and served-alcohol bases to calculate 9% state meals tax and 10% state alcohol tax, with an optional additional 1% on both when confirmed applicable. This model omits other municipal rates, service-charge treatment and minimum shortfalls. Confirm the transaction’s actual taxable base, location and effective rates before relying on the result.

Check the quoted bases before applying rates
The example uses $24,000 meals and $9,000 served alcohol. State amounts are $2,160 and $900; an applicable additional 1% on both adds $330.
Total modeled tax is $3,390 and the subtotal with that tax is $36,390. Confirm service fees, exemptions and any different municipal tax separately; absence from one state list does not establish no local tax.

References
Vermont taxes the food and the alcohol at your wedding at different rates, and in municipalities with the applicable local option tax it taxes both again at a further one per cent. On a catering bill of any size that difference is real money, and it is applied after the per-person package figure a venue quotes you, so quoted packages and final invoices diverge.
The calculator applies the published rates: 9% on food, 10% on alcoholic beverages, and 1% local option on both where the town has adopted it. The tool does not estimate your catering bill and it does not guess a service charge, because those are the venue's numbers and not the state's.
Put in the food and bar figures your venue has quoted and it shows only the taxes modeled here; other municipal rates, taxable service charges or minimum shortfalls need separate treatment.
- Worked example: catering tax calculator
- A wedding in Stowe, which is on the state's local option list, with $24,000 of food and $9,000 of bar quoted by the venue.
The $3,390.00 is what the state adds on top of the numbers the venue quoted. A service charge, if the venue applies one, is separate again and is the venue's own.
How the catering tax calculator works, and its limits
The calculator multiplies the food figure by 9%, the bar figure by 10%, and, when the local option box is ticked, the sum of both by 1%. Those three rates come from the Vermont Department of Taxes and are cited below with the date they were read.
What it does not do
It does not estimate your catering bill, because only your venue can quote that. It does not add a service charge, which the venue sets and which varies. And it does not decide for you whether your venue's town is on the local option list. The minimums and taxes page and regions page explain the address check. Historic town groupings are not a determination of the current rate for a particular venue invoice.
Vermont wedding catering tax calculator: 9%, 10% and 1%: limits.
Tax rates and taxable bases depend on the transaction. Ask the supplier to identify the treatment of each site fee or service charge under the applicable rules; an invoice cannot override those rules. This calculator models only its stated inputs and rates.
Does the tax apply to the venue fee?
It applies to taxable meals, rooms and alcoholic beverage sales. Ask your venue for a quote showing tax as its own line.
Is this a tax determination?
No: it is arithmetic on published rates. The applicable tax rules control the amount; ask the supplier to explain the taxable lines on its invoice.
