Lodging
Guest lodging for a Vermont wedding
Allocate wedding lodging by households, room types and confirmed nights rather than the reception maximum. Hotel Champlain lists 258 rooms overall and a ten-room-per-night minimum for a discounted block. Grafton’s full-property package offers a block of up to 47 rooms, paid by guests. Neither statement guarantees all inventory for every date.
Rooms, beds and room nights are different units
An assumed 30 rooms for two nights is 60 room nights. If 60 traveling guests share in pairs it may suit that allocation, but families, solo guests and accessible-room requirements change the mix. Sleepy Hollow’s weekend package includes eight rooms for up to 22 over two nights; its micro package includes one night.
Record the booking deadline, release and attrition terms, payer, deposit, cancellation and minimum stay. Separate the couple’s preparation room from the overnight booking.
Taxable hotel rooms carry the state’s 9% rooms tax, with applicable municipal taxes and fees checked separately; some short-term rentals have additional rules. A hypothetical $250 hotel room at 9% is $272.50 before other charges.

- Lodging against capacity: how many guests each verified venue can house.
26 of the 45 Vermont venues state something about lodging, and the figures do not line up with their capacities. Mountain Top Resort states on-site lodging for 290 against a stated capacity of up to 250, so everyone can sleep where they dance. The Essex Resort states 120 guest rooms against a capacity of up to 350.
The Inn at the Round Barn Farm states twelve Inn rooms beside a barn that holds up to 200, which is about 16.7 guests of capacity for every room. Killington's 200-room hotel sits beside a capacity of up to 300. The other 19 venues state no lodging, and most guests at those weddings sleep somewhere else.
Stated lodging against stated capacity at eleven verified venues
The eleven venues whose stated lodging is a count, set against the largest capacity each states. Guests per room is arithmetic on those two figures.
The venues that describe lodging without a count
Trapp Family Lodge, the Woodstock Inn, Edson Hill, Sugarbush, Mount Snow and Riverside Farm each state that lodging exists without stating how many rooms. Basin Harbor lists inn rooms, cottages and private houses, with its largest house sleeping 32 or more.
For those, ask how many rooms are available on your dates and what a block commits you to. See guest lodging.
The 19 venues that state no lodging.
Guests at these venues stay in nearby inns, rentals and hotels, and because rural Vermont has limited lodging on popular weekends, the safest plan is a lodging list on the wedding website before the save-the-dates go out, with the distance from each place to the venue written next to it.
See out-of-town guests for what to tell people, and guest transportation for the shuttle question.
How many rooms does Killington's hotel have?; A 200-room, full-service mountainside hotel, according to the venue, with event spaces of up to 300.
What lodging does Twin Farms state?
Ten individually designed cottages. The venue takes inquiries directly and publishes no capacity or booking detail, so ask what the cottages hold and what a weekend costs.
Why are guests per room not shown for every venue?
Some venues state lodging as cottages or overnight guests, not rooms, so the ratio would not be comparable.
How many verified venues state lodging at all?
26 of 45, in the venue's own words.
What should I ask a venue with no stated lodging?
Which nearby places guests use, how far they are and whether a shuttle runs. See guest lodging.
Does on-site lodging change the cost?
It can. Ask whether the wedding party's rooms are in the fee and what a room block commits you to.
What tax applies to lodging?
The 9% Vermont rooms tax, plus 1% in a local option town.

Killington describes a 200-room hotel. The Essex Resort has 120 guest rooms. The Inn at the Round Barn Farm has twelve.
Twin Farms has ten cottages. Sterling Ridge Resort has 28 cabins and homes. Sleepy Hollow includes its eight-room inn in every package.

Wedding room blocks in Vermont: what to ask
How many rooms are reserved, and for which nights?
What is the release date, after which unsold rooms return to general sale?
Am I responsible for unsold rooms? Some blocks are a commitment, not a hold.
What is the group rate, and does it include breakfast?
Is there a minimum stay, such as two nights on a peak weekend?
Can guests book by phone or a link, and who pays the deposit?
The Round Barn's twelve rooms and the Essex Resort's 120 make the same question a different size. Ask how many of your guests the venue can house before you pick a date.
Rooms tax and local option tax on wedding guest lodging
Lodging carries the 9% Vermont rooms tax, and 1% more in a local option town. Guests see it on the bill. See sales tax on wedding purchases for the rates in one table.
If you are paying for rooms, ask whether the quote includes tax. If guests are paying, tell them the rate.
Guest lodging when the Vermont venue has no rooms
Put a lodging list on the wedding website before the save-the-dates go out. See wedding website and registry.
Where can I read what a venue says about lodging?
On its own page. See venues.
What is Twin Farms' lodging?; Ten individually designed cottages, according to the venue. Twin Farms takes inquiries directly and publishes no booking detail, so ask what the cottages hold and what a weekend costs.
Does the Equinox have guest rooms attached to a wedding space?
Its Meadow Tent has five guest rooms attached, according to the venue, alongside a tent for up to 300. Ask the Equinox how the rooms are assigned and whether they form part of the wedding fee.
How many overnight guests can the Wilburton Inn host?
Up to 150, on its 30-acre hilltop and nearby lodging, according to the venue.

A getting-ready room and the wedding-night suite in Vermont
A getting-ready room needs space for hair, makeup and a photographer, plus good window light. A standard hotel room is small for that. Ask an inn whether a larger room or suite is available for the morning.
Budget for the morning as well as the night. A bridal party of six needs room for six chairs, two mirrors and a rack for garment bags, which a standard king room may not offer. A suite or a ground-floor function room is usually the better fit, and it is worth asking whether it carries its own charge.
For the wedding night, ask whether the suite is held for you, whether late check-in is fine and whether breakfast is sent to the room. See hair and makeup for the timing that decides how early the room is needed.
Minimum stays, deposits and cancellation at Vermont inns
Small inns often require two nights on a summer or foliage weekend and take a deposit at booking. Check what the cancellation window is and whether a change of date moves the deposit or loses it.
Rooms carry the 9% rooms tax, plus 1% in a local option town. A $250 room comes to $272.50 with the state tax and $275.00 where the local option applies, so a two-night minimum is $545 or $550 before any resort fee. See sales tax on wedding purchases.
Guest rooms as well as your own
The guest side of this, room blocks and how far ahead guests should book, is covered in guest lodging.
Keep the two bookings separate so a change in your own room does not disturb the block. As a rough check, if 60 of 100 guests travel and share rooms in pairs, the block is about 30 rooms.
Questions to ask about hotels & inns, and what each answer decides.
Do you hold a room or suite for the couple, and for which nights?
Ask about the night before as well as the wedding night, and about a room for getting ready on the morning.
What is the minimum stay on my weekend?
Two nights on a peak Saturday is common. It changes both the cost and the number of nights you must book.
What is the deposit, and when is it refundable?
Read the cancellation window and the date-change rule before paying, and ask whether a moved date keeps the deposit or forfeits it.
Is late check-in and early breakfast possible?
A reception ends late. Find out whether someone is at the desk and whether breakfast can be sent up.
How far is the inn from the venue by road?
A short drive matters at midnight. In rural Vermont the nearest inn may not be the closest on the map.
Is there a group rate for the wedding party?
A rate for the rooms you book for family and the wedding party is worth asking for, separate from the guest block.
- Sales tax on wedding purchases
- Which Vermont tax lands on which wedding purchase: 6% sales tax on goods, 9% on meals and rooms, and 10% on served alcohol; confirm any applicable local option separately.
